Essential Customs & Immigration Information
Understanding Mexico's entry requirements ensures a smooth arrival experience. The process for U.S. travelers has been simplified, with no more immigration forms needed on arrival. We've outlined everything you need to know for hassle-free entry and exit.
1
Passport Requirements
Your U.S. passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. While Mexico doesn't require six months validity like some countries, we strongly recommend at least six months validity to avoid any issues. Ensure your passport is in good condition with blank pages for stamps.
2
Immigration Process
Upon deplaning in Cancun, you will proceed through immigration via one of two options (Option 2 may not be available in all terminals):
  • Option 1: Normal Immigration Lines
Speak to an agent who will stamp your passport. Please keep your physical or digital boarding pass until you clear immigration, as it may be needed.
  • Option 2: Electronic Passport Control Machines (18+ only)
Enter and scan your passport. Wait for your photo to be taken and collect your receipt with the QR code. Retain this receipt as you may be asked for it upon departure from Mexico.
3
Baggage Claim & Customs
After immigration, proceed to collect your bags at the carousel. You may be randomly selected to have your bags checked. All travelers must complete a Mexican customs declaration form. Declare any items that exceed duty-free allowances (including gifts). Most personal items and clothing are duty-free. You may bring up to 10 packs of cigarettes, 3 liters of alcohol, and reasonable amounts of personal care products and medications.
4
Visitax (Tourism Tax)
Before your trip, it is recommended to pay the tourism Visitax online at https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/. Download the QR code voucher to your phone, as you may be asked to show proof of payment upon arrival or departure.
Airport Arrival Process at CUN
Step 1: Deplane & Follow Signs
Upon landing at Cancun International Airport (CUN), follow signs for "Immigration" or "Migracion." The airport is modern and well-marked in both Spanish and English. Terminal 4 serves most international flights.
Step 2: Immigration Checkpoint
Present your passport and completed FMM tourist card. The immigration officer will stamp your passport and FMM, returning one copy to you. This process typically takes 5-15 minutes depending on arrival volume. Keep your stamped FMM with your passport—you'll need it to exit Mexico.
Step 3: Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim and collect your luggage. Porters are available if needed (tipping is customary at $1-2 USD per bag). Check that all your bags have arrived before proceeding to customs.
Step 4: Customs Declaration
Hand your completed customs form to the officer. You'll press a button that randomly displays green (proceed) or red (bag inspection). If red, simply open your bags for a quick visual check—this is routine. Then proceed to the arrivals hall.
Step 5: Ground Transportation
Your Travel GHR representative or pre-arranged transfer will meet you in the arrivals hall with a sign displaying your name. Avoid solicitors and only use pre-arranged transportation or official airport taxis for your safety and peace of mind.
Currency, Tipping & Language Essentials
Currency & Payments
The official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, though you'll typically receive change in pesos at less favorable rates.
Best practices:
  • Use ATMs for the best exchange rates
  • Credit cards work at most hotels, restaurants, and shops
  • Keep small bills (20-100 pesos) for tips and small purchases
  • Notify your bank of travel dates to avoid card blocks
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is customary and appreciated in Mexico.
As minimum wage in Mexico is around $8 USD per day, tipping goes a long way and can really make a difference in a staff member's life. US dollars or Mexican pesos are both accepted and appreciated for tips. If you plan to leave the resort for any meals, shopping, or excursions, bring and use Mexican Pesos as that is the country's currency.
Please bring lots of $1, $5, and $10 bills if using USD, and $20mxn, $50mxn, $100mxn, and $200mxn if using pesos. The front desk can likely get you change, but it is easier to bring it from home.
Here are some suggested tipping amounts:
  • Drinks at the pool or beach: $2 USD per round
  • Waitstaff at served breakfast/lunch: $3 USD per guest
  • Waitstaff at buffet meals: $2 USD per guest
  • Waitstaff at served dinner: $5 USD per guest
  • Luggage handlers: $2 USD per bag
  • Drivers/transportation: $5-$10 USD per person (recommended $10-$15 USD for airport transfers)
  • Room Service: $5-$10 USD per order
  • Daily housekeeping: $5 USD (Leave on pillow with "housekeeping" written on a piece of paper)
These are just suggestions; please feel free to tip more for exceptional service.
Language Tips
Spanish is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.
Helpful phrases:
  • Hello: Hola (OH-lah)
  • Thank you: Gracias (GRAH-see-ahs)
  • Please: Por favor (pour fah-VOHR)
  • Excuse me: Con permiso
  • Check please: La cuenta
  • How much?: ¿Cuánto cuesta?
Making an effort with Spanish, even basic phrases, is always appreciated and enhances your cultural experience.
Safety & Travel Confidence
Cancun and the Riviera Maya are among Mexico's safest tourist destinations, with dedicated tourism police and resort security. Like any international destination, practicing standard travel safety ensures a worry-free vacation.
General Safety
  • Stay within well-trafficked tourist areas and resort zones
  • Use only licensed taxis or pre-arranged transportation
  • Keep valuables in hotel safes
  • Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night
  • Travel insurance is highly recommended
Health Precautions
  • Drink bottled or filtered water only
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+ recommended)
  • Pack prescription medications in original containers
  • Avoid ice in drinks outside resorts
  • Apply insect repellent in jungle or evening settings
Beach & Water Safety
  • Observe beach flag warning systems (green = safe, yellow = caution, red = dangerous)
  • Use only licensed water sports operators
  • Never swim alone or in unfamiliar waters
  • Respect coral reefs—look but don't touch
  • Stay hydrated in the tropical climate
Weather & What to Expect Year-Round
Climate Overview
Cancun enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging 75-90°F (24-32°C). The region experiences two main seasons that influence travel planning.
Dry Season (November–April)
Peak travel season featuring ideal weather conditions: lower humidity, minimal rainfall, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s°F. Expect larger crowds and higher prices, particularly during holidays. This period is perfect for beach activities, water sports, and outdoor excursions.
Wet Season (May–October)
Characterized by higher humidity, afternoon rain showers (usually brief), and hurricane risk (June-November, peak in September-October). Despite occasional rain, mornings are typically sunny and beautiful. This season offers better rates, fewer crowds, and lush, vibrant landscapes. The heat is more intense but manageable with proper planning.
Monthly Averages
  • Dec-Feb: 75-82°F, lowest humidity
  • Mar-May: 80-90°F, warming up
  • Jun-Aug: 82-92°F, humid, afternoon showers
  • Sep-Nov: 80-88°F, peak hurricane season

Travel GHR Tip: Shoulder seasons (late April-May and November) offer excellent value with good weather and fewer tourists. We monitor weather patterns and can adjust your itinerary if needed.

Pre-Departure Checklist
A few important reminders to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey to Cancun.
Plan accordingly for children, pets and others in your care should you be unable to return as originally scheduled.
Provide your emergency contact with your itinerary and my contact information.
Download WhatsApp to your phone – this is a common messaging service in Mexico used for resort, transfer and excursion communications.
Take your passport book out and make sure it's not expired.
Before your trip, pay the tourism Visitax at https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/ and download the QR code voucher to your phone.
Pack lightweight earphones for movies on board (not iPhone ones). Bring your regular earphones as well in case entertainment is only via your phone.
Check for anything that will set off a metal detector and slow you down.
Make sure your carry-on does not have any banned items or liquids/gels over 100ml.
Many airports require you to remove your shoes, so make sure they're comfortable and easy to get in and out of quickly.
Keep yourself hydrated - bring a refillable water bottle to fill after security, or purchase water after security for your flight.
Pay attention to the first signs of dehydration: headache followed by nausea. Drink plenty of water both on your flight and at your destination.
Navigating Cancun International Airport (CUN)
Cancun International Airport is Mexico's second-busiest airport, serving over 25 million passengers annually. The facility features four terminals, with Terminal 4 handling most international flights. Understanding the airport layout and procedures makes your arrival and departure seamless.
1
Pre-Arrival (48 Hours Before)
Confirm your flight status and any schedule changes. Complete online check-in if available. Verify your passport validity and locate your FMM tourist card if pre-filled online. Review your ground transportation arrangements.
2
Arrival Process
Follow immigration signs, complete FMM processing, collect baggage, pass through customs (button system), and meet your pre-arranged transfer in the arrivals hall. Total process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on flight volume.
3
During Your Stay
Keep your FMM tourist card with your passport at all times. Retain boarding passes and any travel documents. Confirm your departure flight 24 hours in advance and note any terminal changes.
4
Departure Day
Arrive at the airport 3 hours before international flights. Check in and receive boarding pass. Pay departure tax if not included in ticket. Pass through security with FMM tourist card. Proceed to gate area with duty-free shopping and dining.
Important Information: Airport Transfers

Once you proceed out of the secured baggage area, the hallway is full of people trying to sell you transfers and timeshare resorts. Just keep walking and ignore everyone inside the building.
THESE ARE NOT YOUR PEOPLE.
Do not stop and talk to anyone INSIDE the airport.
YOUR PEOPLE ARE OUTSIDE!
We have all of your arrangements made and paid for already (unless you are set up to pay a driver).
DO NOT STOP UNTIL YOU ARE OUTSIDE!
Once outside the terminal, you will find many representatives holding up name signs, signs of their company or signs of the hotel. Please refer to your itinerary to see who your transfers are booked with, and locate them.
If you require a car seat for your transfer, please let me know ahead of time so this can be arranged. Car seats are not mandatory in México.
Tips are not included in your airport transfer. If you are satisfied with the service please tip the driver. I recommend $10-$15 USD.
Airport Departure Guidelines
Check-In Process
International flights require check-in at least 3 hours before departure. Present your passport, return portion of your FMM tourist card, and any boarding pass information. Verify your flight terminal as Cancun uses multiple terminals.
Departure Tax: Most airlines now include Mexico's departure tax (approximately $30-60 USD) in ticket prices. If not included, you'll pay at designated kiosks before security using credit card or cash. Keep your receipt as proof of payment.
Security Screening
Mexican security follows international standards. Standard restrictions apply: liquids in 3.4 oz containers, remove shoes and belts, laptops out of bags. Lines can be long during peak morning hours (8-11 AM), so allow extra time.
Duty-Free Shopping
After security, you'll find extensive duty-free shopping featuring Mexican tequila, artisan crafts, jewelry, perfumes, and luxury goods. Prices are competitive, though not always cheaper than resort shops. Currency accepted includes USD, pesos, and major credit cards.
Final Tips
  • Keep your FMM card until handed to authorities
  • Download boarding passes to your phone as backup
  • Have your passport easily accessible
  • Use airport WiFi to stay updated on gate changes
  • Leave time to purchase last-minute gifts or snacks
  • Stay hydrated but remember liquid restrictions

IMPORTANT RESORT TIPS
  • Most resorts have a Time Share/Club program. They are typically pushy and will offer freebies (spa treatments or excursions) in exchange for "a short amount of time." This is never the case - it is a high pressure lengthy sales pitch. Do not hesitate to be firm and let them know you are not interested.
  • Wear reef safe sunscreen and reapply often.
  • Drink lots of water in between cocktails.
  • If you have problems with your resort or room, speak to hotel management as soon as possible so they can rectify the problem while you're there.
  • Smoking is now illegal in Mexico in all public areas. Each resort will have designated smoking areas - ask staff where they are located.
  • While you cannot drink tap water in Mexico due to high mineral content, all water and ice served at your resort and excursions is filtered.
  • If your resort requires dinner reservations for a la carte restaurants, make them on arrival to secure your preferred restaurants and times.
  • Please use the safe in your room for all valuables.
  • Make a point to chat and be friendly with staff. They work hard in the heat and sun everyday. Friendliness goes a long way.
SARGASSUM
Free floating seaweed that can wash up on beaches. The amount fluctuates based on time of year, ocean currents, weather, wind, tides and location. While typically seasonal in warmer months, it cannot be predicted. Resort staff does their best to keep the beach clean.
Travel Insurance & Protection
Why Travel Insurance Matters
While we hope your trip proceeds flawlessly, travel insurance provides essential protection against unexpected events. Cancun's popularity and Mexico's healthcare costs make insurance particularly valuable for this destination.
Recommended Coverage
  • Trip cancellation/interruption: Protects your investment if you must cancel or cut your trip short due to illness, injury, or family emergency
  • Medical coverage: U.S. health insurance typically doesn't cover international medical care. Ensure at least $50,000 in coverage
  • Emergency evacuation: Critical for serious medical situations requiring transport to U.S. facilities
  • Baggage protection: Covers lost, stolen, or delayed luggage
  • Adventure sports coverage: If planning diving, zip-lining, or other activities, confirm they're covered
What to Look For
Choose a policy that covers your trip's full cost and includes 24/7 emergency assistance in English. Read the fine print on exclusions, particularly regarding pre-existing conditions and adventure activities.

Travel GHR Note: We can recommend reputable travel insurance providers suited to your specific itinerary. Many of our luxury resort partners also offer travel protection options at booking.
